Hola, Loved Ones!

5.
Biological. Spiritual. Chemical. Astronomical. Financial. Musical. Technological.
5 leads and follows us. Muslims pray 5 times a day. 5 is the life year when we begin to interact fully within our immediate environment yet also refine an awareness that there is MORE beyond those walls. The 5th year is generally considered the year of business solvency. There are 5 books of the Torah. Old folks say if a marriage makes it to 5 it can make it to 10 (and so on and so forth in multiples of 5). Mayans claim this period as the 5th World. 5 is prime and primeval. I could go on and on but this is what I want to really say...URB ALT Festival is our labor of love. I'm happy to say that we are about to consumate our 5th year. The following is what we are being about. RAWK!
URB ALT Fest's 5th Anniversary opens June 18 at The Harlem School of the Arts with a cool tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey (yes, a tribute to 2010 would have been more appropos but that film sucked LOL). All of the acts on the launch bill at The Harlem School of the Arts are onto some crazy theatrical thang so it's should be banging. My man, Jneiro Jarel, has dusted off his Viberian passport to play a VERY rare live performance so you definitely do not want to miss this show. JJ will be treating us to tracks from his new Brazilian opus "Fauna." Dearling Physique showcases the evening with his electro punked out Elvis on steroids meets the Wiz vibration. Husband and wife duo, MiLO, feels like going to a late night concert and finding Sade singing with razorblades between her lips over a bent jam between Portishead and 70s era Elton John. It's darker than dark dramatics and I dig it.

We take it out to the curb June 19 and RAWK out for FREE in St. Nicholas Park. It takes a special kind of energy to move the crowd under the sun without crazy light shows and such so all of our St. Nick playas were placed 'cause they kill without the bells and whistles. Faith, Stoni Taylor and Uninterrupted BRING IT each and everytime they step to the stage. One word describes all of these cats: "RAWWWWWR!" We're crazy excited to bring Twin Shadow uptown cause his song "Castles in the Snow" has been a constant for the last 2 months. He's recently signed to Grizzly Bear Chris Taylor's Terrible Records imprint. June 19th is also the album release date for MuthaWit's new record so we might be appearing in some form or fashion at the show but it's a big secret. Shhhh.

June 24th at Galapagos Artspace is a hip celebration of Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew." That record changed the game in a way that is still being felt 40 years later. We have put together a special URB ALT Orchestra with artists from the international scene to pay homage to "Bitches Brew." The bill also features crazy like genius songwriters Oh My Goodness and Art Terry. You're bound to leave the evening smiling and scratching your head.

But WAIT. The next night URB ALT goes downtown Manhattan to 92Y Tribeca with a "Wear White" theme and premieres the horror/psychodrama feature film "Phlo." You cats prolly remember when we were shooting "Phlo" last year. Well, it's done and y'all get to see me get all THESPIAN on a mugh first. lol Also being screened is "Matty's World" an animated sci fi film short that harkens back to the days when Zora Neale Hurston, Flash Gordon and Robert Johnson orbited the earth. Hunh?

Yeah. But hey, the night doesn't end there. After the last reel of film flitters away, Leila Adu performs a special NYC show that will show mughs what SRO audiences in the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Los Angeles and Chicago experienced on her recent tour. The 92Y event will close with the 15-20 piece MuthaWit Orchestra performing an extended set of new and old cosmically crafted and terran inspired songs. Expect serious costume drama for this night.
