TRANSIT Press release

Dubbed as “one of the most interesting, if hopelessly below-the-pop-culture-radar bands in New Zealand,” the irrepressible two-piece of mr sterile and Chrissie Butler have reeled in the brilliance of a swathe of Aotearoa’s finest musicans and artists.

On the musical front, Jeff Henderson of screaming jazz improv saxophone fame has layered up the weighty melodics, alongside the scattering of gamelan by Nell Thomas (Orchestra of Spheres) and the solid bass grooves of Aaron Lloydd. Dean Hapeta aka Te Kupu, Upper Hutt Posse, has been a key collaborator on the project, recording all the vox, sax and extra sounds as well as contributing his own vox and text. Lyrical collaborations with Wellington poet Maria McMillan have also been woven in.

The gathering of the 11 images for the eleven tracks has been a momentous effort. Eight of the works have been commissioned specifically for Transit. The artists, Andrew Ross, Deborah Barton, James Robinson, Campbell Kneale, Stefan Neville, Kerry-Ann Lee, Jeff Henderson, and Garage Collective, responded as they desired, creating a powerful collection to accompany the songs. Two works are from artists Tao Wells and Roger Morris, who have gifted established works to be tagged to the songs. The eleventh art work is a very special Wayang puppet received as a gifted when the Assembly played in Java on their south east Asia tour in 2007.

The melee has been mixed and mastered by the fine hands of Mike Gibson and the sound is fat, rich, and challenging. This is not lounge music. This is music to shake yourself to, to play loud, and to bask in the musicianship of shape, form and delivery.

In 2011 mr sterile Assembly will tour the exhibition across the country in between tours to Australia in April, and Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in July.

Transit has been released by skirted Records (NZ), and Tenzenmen (Aus), with the support of Creative New Zealand.

New song from the coming album from mr sterile Assembly - Aotearoa New Zealand

This song is about a chap from the city of Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand, who was ousted for being an undercover informant for the NZ police. For 10 years he toured the country, at quite some expense to the NZ tax payer, gathering trivia and detail on the actions of various activist groups. This James Bond was uncovered when his partner at the time was asked to fix his malfunctioning computer. She discovered years of contact with the police. There is an article here from…See More

Profile Information

Name:
mr sterile
Bio:
mr sterile Assembly is a dynamic and assertive two-piece of drums, bass and vocals. Increasingly described as ‘Outsider Punk’, the Assembly has continually cleaved its own path, crafting a distinct south pacific sound. Starting in the mid-90′s, as an anarchic solo project mr sterile has mutated into diverse territory over the last decade from duo to seven-piece orchestra and back again. The current line-up is a tightly focused, fast-paced performance orientated unit. Heavier in sound, the driving bass plays over frenetic and often complex rhythms, creating an unnerving and unexpected foundation for rich vocal play.

The unique storytelling for which mr sterile Assembly is renowned sits at that heart of every composition. The Assembly’s lyrics are researched prose often commenting on pertinent issues to modern life, statements of position, anecdotes of humorous pranks, scenarios played out historically that exemplify lessons to learn and the risks if ignored, and accounts of extraordinary lives.

2011 will mark the Assembly’s 10th birthday. In the previous decade the group, although committed to playing locally and nationally throughout each year, has jumped off shore to presenting it’s enigmatic performance in Australia, Czech Republic, Java, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore, & Slovakia.

Already with four previous audio releases, the Assembly are currently in the final stages of preparing for a new album release in Feb 2011.

On home turf, mr sterile are continuing the tradition of bringing diverse music from overseas to Aotearoa New Zealand audiences. To date mr sterile Assembly have organised three tours for SABOT [rock duo/administrators of the Tabor cultural centre CESTA in Czech Republic], two tours for the French turbo folk micro-orchestra Vialka, one tour for Japanese Limited Express (has gone?), and one tour each for Czech Republic progressive poetic rock stalwarts Už Jsme Doma, and American writer Mykel Board.
