Shanti Om is first and foremost, in the simplest of descriptions, a prayer for peace. But when trying to describe Shanti Om and the music that has been created in it's name, it's almost easier to describe what it is not. Shanti Om is not a person. Neither is it a band. Rather Shanti Om is the energy and the experience that is created through the music when it is performed. Shanti Om is part conjure woman and part street corner preacher. It is heavily message driven music that takes the listener back to a time and space when music was chanted and played with the purpose and clear intention of reaching the soul. This music speaks with that same purpose to the human condition. This sound, the product of a new millineum, is all together mellow and assertive, simple and riddled.
The Conductor -
E. Shanti Moore is the mind through which this music is conceptualized/channeled. She was raised as an only child, the daughter of two metaphysical ministers, one a musician and the other a nurse. It was a combination that produced very interesting results. Shanti's background and upbringing have had a definite and significant influence on the music that is Shanti Om. While developing musically and creatively, Shanti who is also a Registered Nurse spent years working in hospitals, jails and mental institutions. This too has had a significant affect on the music.
The Music -
From the first introductory notes Shanti Om invites the listener to crawl inside the rabbit hole and slide into and alternate reality. The music paints a canvas full of whimsical melodies, gutteral cadences and harmonies that spellbind. Full of heavy rhythms and sometimes heavier thoughts, the content confronts the listener head on, pulls up a chair and invites them to have an honest and intimate conversation about love and life. Shanti Om's first project was an ep called "Medium" that was co-produced by African Sciences and released in 2004. The first full length Shanti Om album is due to be released by summer of 2009.

Hola, Shanti! Whew! I feel like I am waking up from a long dream. I took down the last bit of artwork today from the Harlem School of the Arts which officially means the URB ALT Fest is over. Now I have a couple days to sit back and really reflect on all of the cool things that happen to make it a possibility. I watched some of the video footage from our sets and you ARE a whirling dervish of a performer now. Very very very cool to see the growth and openness. Thanks for sharing your energy and boundless talents with all the good people that attended the fest. You're a STAR. - Boston
