URB ALT

URB ALT is Everything and Nothing. Labels are a Box. Create your own Box

1)Astor Piazzola: Zero Hour album on vinyl. This album came out on Sting's old record label "Pangaea." "Libertango" is one of the featured songs. Grace Jones covered it on her Night Clubbing album. I put two of Piazolla's videos up. Y'all check him out.

2)Free Moral Agents: This is Ikey Owens' alternative group demo. You probably already know that Ikey is the brother that catches wreck on the keys for the Mars Volta. This music sounds nothing like Mars but is very cool in it's own right.

3)Miles Davis, Agharta: My bestest favorite Miles Davis album. This album was part of a trio of records that he released in 1975 from a live show in Japan. It featured three guitarists: an amazing Brazilian named Dominique Gaumont; the soon to be producer for Madonna, Reggie Lucas; and the master six string sound technician, Pete Cosey. The legend is that this band opened up the gates of hell with the music on this album. Miles was having all kinds of medical and drug issues during this period so his performance career kind of ground to a halt until his return to a much more pop oriented sound in the late 80s.

4)Issac Hayes: Hot Buttered Soul. "Walk On By," indeed. R.I.P. It Up, Ike.

What ch'all listening to?

Love,

B

I have to say this week has been really cool rediscovering music I haven't listened to in years and receiving new albums from folks in the snail mail and e-mail boxes. Just a hint of what I'm feeling:

1)"He Loves Me" by The Family Stand: Great love song made for the slow dance if mughs even do that anymore. Tour de force by Sandra St. Victor with one of the funniest hooks ever. "Googabooga, I love that man!" lol

2)"Not Lying" by Oh My Goodness: The song ain't finished so Therese says but it's really beautiful. Had pulled my folks into the studio on three occasions to ask who the artist was. Fantastic vocal and music arrangements. OMG is really getting the melding of her pop songcraft with sneaky drum n bass grooves down.

3)"Spaces" by Fat Transfer: Beautiful melody floating atop harsh lo-fi rhythms and production. Pretty much a harbinger of what's to come on the album. Ms. Fat Transfer has a very unique way of delivering experimental music.

4)"Purple Schards" by Busdriver: Amazing use of rhyme INSIDE jazz oriented beats. Probably the closest I've ever heard of anyone getting the feel of a true jazz and hip hop hybrid. Most times it just feels like someone cuts up a jazz groove and raps atop it. Cool but this song(the entire album actually) just feels trippy in the way that the best jazz is.

5)"Native Americans" by Ornette Coleman: One of the darkest but coolest compositions on the classic "Skies of America" orchestral album. If you've ever wondered what avant garde strings can sound like this is a good entre into that world.

6)"The Moving Finger" by Dorothy Ashby: Beautiful instrumental that goes out with an incredibly poignant spoken word section. One of the coolest album endings ever.

If next weeks brings as much cool music as this past one I'm going to have to figure out how to start up a radio station. lol
